Peer Mentor Welcome
Abdalla Mohamed is a sophomore from Sudan majoring in Mass Media. He is serving as a Lead Peer Mentor for Spring orientation.
Why did you want to become a peer mentor?
When I first came to the United States of America. It was a very interesting experience. By the time I got to my orientation I had no idea what to do and had not started working on anything such as making a bank account. Then I meet the peer mentors, who were diverse and excited to help, energetic and hospitable. They were the first people an international student interacted with. I saw how peer mentors bring joy to new students by comforting them and making them feel safe and welcomed into this new community. I wanted to be that person to someone. That is why I decided to become a peer mentor.
What has helped you to be successful as an international student?
I feel like networking has help me in a lot of situations during my time here. Also the amazing work that is provided by all of our campus resources has also helped me succeed and prosper. From our Kearney Center all the way to the security office, all of those resources that are provided to us are really helpful and they help me a lot.
What else do you think students would like to know?
MSU Mankato is here for you and wants you to achieve your dreams. All the resources and faculty are here to help you and only you. It might seem hard to reach out and ask for help sometimes as an international student, but that is one of the ways to becoming successful in MSU Mankato is to ask questions without hesitation. We are one.
